Cape Dory Sailboat Owners

Specifications: Cape Dory 40 Explorer
Trawler
Disclaimer: The CDSOA is a private voluntary social
club. The CDSOA and this Web site are not associated with and do not
represent Cape Dory Yachts, which is a division of Newport Shipyards
Corp., nor any other yacht builder.
The Cape Dory 40 Explorer is a well designed, well built
fast trawler with comfortable accomodations for owners and guests.
The interior decor is attractive with a well equipped galley on the
upper level. The flybridge has twin helmseats with additional seating.
The offset bridge ladder saves cockpit space.
This high-end performance trawler, with combined modern
construction and classic DownEast profile, is spacious with a two-stateroom
interior including two heads (each sharing a common shower stall),
teak/holly cabin sole, and lower helm with deck door.
Additional features include underwater exhausts, teak
cockpit sole, extra-wide side decks, roomy engine room. A full-length
keel protects running gear in case of grounding. Cruise at 18 knots
with a single 300 hp Cat diesel (23-24 knots top).
We believe there were about 4 to 6 CD40s built. Hull
#1 was built by Cape Dory Yachts but the rest were from Newport Shipyards
of Bristol, RI or Amityville, NY. Newport Shipyards acquired the Cape
Dory name and the molds for the Cape Dory motoryachts (except the
30-footer), the CD300 Motorsailer, and the CD30MKII, CD330, CD36 and
custom CD40 sailboats around 1991.
