The Buzzards Bay Float-in, hosted
by the Northeast Fleet, will take place Saturday and Sunday,
August 20-21, 2005 at Bassetts Island, Pocasset, MA.
Try to arrive as soon as possible to ensure that you'll find room
to anchor.
Located on the eastern shore of Buzzards Bay and just east of
the western entrance to the Cape Cod Canal (G"1"
QG) and nestled between Wings and Scraggy
Necks you'll find Bassetts Island standing
as sentinel and affording protection to Pocasset Harbor to the
north, Hen Cove and Red Brook Harbor to the east, and Hospital
Cove to the south.

Anchor in the bight east of the island between the channels into
Red Brook Harbor. Follow the north channel through Pocasset Harbor
to RN"12" before leaving the channel
and heading southward along Bassetts Island. Or follow the south
channel past Hospital Cove to RN"14"
then cross over to the north channel's GC"13"
and head west, this route will help you avoid a 4-foot spot. Though
it carries less water, the south channel is easier to follow.
Then anchor 100 yards offshore in 7-13 feet of water. If conditions
permit, we can try a raft-up. Rafting is optional and up to the
discretion of each captain.
NOTE: Local CDSOA sailor, Mary Beth Taylor
writes "Our homeport is Kingman Marine so we're very
familiar with Bassett's. I think the rendezvous should take
advantage of the island and cookout on the beach. You may want
to pass along a bit of local knowledge to those coming...when
approaching using the south channel, tell all boats to stay
as close to mid channel as possible by green can #3. There is
an abandnded mooring block (or something) that has snagged many
a keel, especially when the tide's low. When using the North
channel, same thing. Be sure to stay in the channel and don't
try to cut any markers. There's been a lot of shoaling over
the Winter, and you don't have to stray very far at all before
you come up short on water. The other advice that I can offer
is to keep the party towards the South side of the Island. There
are private residences on the North side."
Use the tide tables for Newport. High tide at
Barlows Landing in Pocasset Harbor is 24 minutes later; low tide
is 18 minutes later. Mean tidal range is 4 feet.
The town of Bourne has two pump-out boat which can be reached
by contacting the Bourne harbormaster (VHF. Ch. 9)
If you'd like to explore Bassetts Island, row your dinghy to
the southeast side of the island and enjoy a walk or swim at Bassetts
Island Beach. The northern portion of the island is private and
off limits. Whatever you take with you to the island make sure
you take it back as well.
This is an informal event so we can either go ashore at Bassetts
Island or climb aboard the largest Cape Dory in attendance, or
whichever crews offer the use of their boats, for snacks, cocktails
and a potluck dinner shared amongst the crews. If we are a small
group, we also have the option of going ashore at Kingman's and
dining at the Chart Room Restaurant. So be prepared for any of
the above-mentioned scenarios and please bring snack/meal items
to be shared. And don't forget to bring your preferred beverages!
Please help the "host" crews to clean-up afterwards
and offer to row the trash ashore for them at Kingman
Yachting Center in Red Brook Harbor.
How about a potluck breakfast together on Sunday morning as well
before departing?

Can't sail to the float-in? Why not drive? Bring your handheld

via Ch. 16 or 72 and let them know you're there and meet up with
one of the crews at Kingman's. Hail us using
your boat's name followed by "mobile", for example,
I would use "Realization mobile" while using our handheld
VHF from shore.
