winches for a typhon
I'm trying to replace at least one of the winches on my Typhon. The ones on the boat now say Gill Mfg and I can't locate the company. Their circumference is 3 1/16th inches and they're 3 inches high. One of them I known I've got to replace; the other I'm not sure. This second one now tightens down when you winch a line on it. So it ends up screwed right down on the base plate; somehow, whatever mechanism is supposed to prevent this effect isn't working. I'd appreciate any suggestions either on a source to replace these winches or a way to fix the one which tightens down. Thanks...stuart
Re: winches for a typhon
There is supposed to be a washer on the screw that holds the winch together. it has a cup shape to it. one would think when looking at it that the cup would face down, However it does not. If it is installed in this manner the screw will tighten as you use the winch. It may be that this washer is missing and/or the screw has been replace with a shorter one. The screw must be able to be tightend leaving a slight amount of play for the winch to rotate freely.

Re: winches for a typhon
Sounds as if you have Gibb winches. They were used on the earlier Typhoons. Out of England if memory serves me (which isn't always the case). They have plastic pawls that die eventually. Remove entire winch by removing bolts found under the mounting plate and then easy to take apart to look into. Only two small springs to get lost and they aren't 'jumpers', but do it over the kitchen table, not on the dock. You might find some new ones on the shelves of a chandlery somewhere but there are same size replacements available with the same size base and mounting hole pattern.

Serge or anyone,
What make and model do you recommend when replacing the original Gibb winches?
Thanks,
Bill

Later Ty's had Lewmar winches that fit as exact replacements. Will try to remember to look and see if the model number shows when out this weekend.
