A Better Bilge Drain Hose?

Post by Frank Vernet »

I'd like to know what kind of bilge drain hose other esteemed CD owners have under their salon & galley sole.

Sirius, my CD33 #84, currently uses lengths of what appears to be 1.5" Series 140 VAC Standard hose...you know, the semi-flexible white ribbed hose. These run up from the bilge pump, through the engine compartment, through the stbd lazarette to the stbd drain. Is this original OEM installation, and if so, why would CD use a ribbed hose that seems to restrict flow? The only answer that comes to mind is that it restricts the flow BACK into the bilge!

If anyone has replaced these hoses, what did you use? Did you reinstall similar hoses or install something smooth? Please advise.
Thanks in advance to all.

The bilge hose on our CD33 is a black hose. It appears to be pretty standard, which would make sense since it is not under any real pressure. I will be going down to the boat for a few days next week and will check for any specific specifications.

Frank,

There are all sorts of suitable hose types for bilge pump use. The vac type hose is very common for use with a manual gusher pump because it is inexpensive for a given diameter size and long runs, it is managable to route through the boat because it makes tight bends and turns easily without collapsing. Some manufacturers and owners even use it with electrical bilge pump installations (not the best choice). It works fine in a gusher pump installation and any reduction in flow is quite minimal. Head resistance is more critical in a bilge hose installation. If you are replumbing the gusher pump then have no fear about using vac hose, just make sure the quality is good. If you are plumbing a typical centrifigul pump like a Rule then use smooth wall with a fabric wall reinforcement to resist collapsing at bends and turns. A regular PVC hose with a thread reinforcement will also work fine or you can go to a heavier walled multiple layer hose. You can use a quality sump pump vac style hose for the gusher pump that is actually better than most marine grade vac hose as it has a slightly thicker wall and costs substantially less. There are all sorts of industrial quality ribbed hoses on the market similar to vac hose which meet all types of application needs, these hoses are made of many different materials and are more than suitable for a boat bilge application. Check sources such as Goodyear industrial supply stores and others. You would be amazed at the quality increase you can get with these hoses compared to the typical marine hose and save $$ to boot. See below for a link to Pacific Echo who carries the Spiralite line of industrial hoses.

Hope this helps.
