I'm looking at a CD28 that is in need of some repairs. One of the problems is a badly rusted piece of steel under the starboard, aft (lower) chainplate. It has rusted so badly that the bolt is actually cocked in the deck fitting! Can someone tell me if this is supposed to be a large piece of steel, for all the chainplates (similar to my CD25)? I'm thinking of rebuilding this area, then adding stainless straps, bolted through the hull sides, similar to a Pacific Seacraft. I wouldn't have to worry about my repair pulling out.
I believe I can save this boat, as it's apparently had good care (luckily, it's local....which would save me a lot of freight costs....I could sail it home). It will need everything on deck resealed (as my 25 did), all the wood refinished, new sails, canvas, running and standing rigging, electronics......all the usual stuff.
I'm also curious about the 2 cylinder Volvo diesel (13 hp unit). It looks to be well cared for....are these a durable engine? This one shows about 400 hours on the meter. Any education would be appreciated. Thank you, JimL

CD28 chain plate backing

Jim:
There's a lot in the archives about replacing the chain plates. Yes, one piece backs up all three shrouds. There are j shaped pieces of rebar welded to the plate and glassed to the hull. Grinding these free is the tough part of the job. You can "feel" their location if you pass a strong magnet over the hull.
I had the Volvo engine on the CD-28 I used to own. I thought it was reliable. Parts are very expensive, however.
Good Luck,

Thanks for the reply.....it looks like this will be a tough job. I'm confident I can fix it, but the broker is going to have to work with me on the price.....right now they're asking for the moon!
I'll keep you posted if I get crazy.....

I have completly replaced the port side back-up system on the CD27 I am rebuilding. I reviewed all the posts on the subject and started from that point. Its a fair job but from some of your post I am sure you are certainly up to it.
I took photos as I did the job so if you buy the boat, I can share the proceedure and the photos if you wish.
