replacing a port running light bulb

Post by Walt McLean »

I have just bought a Cape Dory 25 and need to put a new light bulb in the port running light fixture. When I try to get the screws out , they seem to just turn around and won't come out. Do you approach the light from inside the CC Dory? I know this is a minor problem but I'm frustrated.

I assume that you are trying to remove the screws from the outside. I do not have a CD25 but my Ty had washers and nuts on the inside. If this is the case with your CD25, you need to grip the nut as you are removing each screw. The only other explanation for the screws turning around is that they are stripped. This is unlikely the case as the fiberglassed portion of the cabin in which the screws are embedded is to my understanding not tapped. On my CD Ty, I held a pair of vise grips on each nut for the screw that I was removing. Once the screws and attached nuts/washers were removed, the bulb was easily changed. Hope this helps.

Pull the inside cabin light, the wires (possibly nuts, also) are behind the base of the cabin light. If yours is like mine, the trick may be to pry under the edge of the cover with a pocket screwdriver, while backing out the screw. Mine didn't want to start out, the first time, but are ok now.
