typhoon standing rigging

Post by shroud of secrecy »

I am considering replacing the very aged (perhaps original?) standing rigging on my typhoon and was wondering where would be the best place to have it made up. Has anyone come across a mail order or web based outfit that is substantially cheaper than the local marina? How little can I reasonably expect to spend on this project?

Not sure about the price now but I had Dywer Aluminum Mast Co do mine a few years back on my Typhoon. They charged about $150 to do it then and did a great job. I sent the existing rigging to them to have while they made up the new rigging.

I used a local rigging shop in Port Washington last winter. Total cost was about $300. This was a bit higher than might be necessary as I had to replace several turnbuckles and add a toggle at the top of the forestay to accommodate a roller furler. Those hardware items added significantly to the cost.

For comparison, a local rigger did mine last May for $390. All new cable and turnbuckles... plus $20 for extension toggles for the upper and lower shrouds which were a bit too short even though he had the old rigging as patterns.

Not sure what sort of deals they offer these days, nor would it have the same financial impact for a small boat like a Typhoon, but I replaced the standing rigging on a Ranger 33 in 1997. the west marine quote was 1000, the defender quote was 800, and Seco South(in Largo FL) did the job for 460, incl postage. No sales tax either as I was in NJ. this was all new wire, eyes, turnbuckles, clevis pins, etc. the work was perfect. Seco is primarily an OEM supplier to a nbr of builders in FL like Caliber and Island Packet, among others.
