Learning Something New Every Day!

I posted earlier about installing a new thermostat to my Universal M-18, and was amazed at the increase in rpms (out of gear). Friday, I braved the 30+ kt winds, and tide and found that while in gear, the rpms were still dismally low at 1900-2000 max! Yesterday, I braved the murky waters and cleaned the prop and shaft of barnacles. What a difference!!! not only does the engine run cooler, but the boat moves like it should. Faster at the same 2000 rpms.

I also goosed it, for a few seconds, to see how much faster it ran in gear, and the tach went up to 2700 rpms, then I backed it down to 2000 rpms. I just wanted to see what type of power I would have in reserved in the event that I needed it. I then proceeded to run the engine for about three hours, up and down the Taunton River, to check the boat speed, check the engine temp and have some fun exploring. I am proud to say that "this engine is clean" (no more evil spirits possess it); and I learned alot in the process.

I'm off to the boat and a great day of sailing. Thanks everyone.
