Just wanted to thank everyone for their assistance in getting my "iron beast" to cool down. I braved the wind and rain last night to get to my boat. I installed the new thermostat, checked all the hoses for delamination, added more coolant, started and bled the cooling system. I am now proud to announce that not only does it run at approximately 165 degrees, but that I was able to throttle up to 3000 rpms easily, whereas last weekend, I could barely get 1900 rpms.
Can't wait to try it out this afternoon. Rain or not.
My question is, "can the cooling system have that much effect on the engine?
Also, I just wanted to mention that I ordered the thermostat and gasket from Hansen Marine in Marblehead on Monday afternoon, and not only were their sales staff knowledgeable and polite, but I received the parts on Tuesday afternoon!
Thanks again everyone.

Cool Runnings...now why is it?

Gary,
Boy, I doubt that the water level or temp would have that large an effect on that engine. But let me be clear about what you are saying:
The way I read your note was that the engine would at NO TIME reach higher than 1900 rpm, even when it was just warming up.
If true, and you now get 3000 rpm (under load I hope..if this is under a no load condition, that rpm is too high I believe) then there has to be something else that changed along with the cooling system.
Keep your eyes and ears open for additional symptoms of any abnormalities in operations when you go out this PM. Any odd sounds or behavior could be a needed symptom if there indeed are additional things to check out.
Let us know how it goes..
Good Luck,

Out of gear, the engine would probably max at 2300 + rpms, now it is 3000 rpms. I took the boat out today to test it. Winds 25-30 kts out of the NE and against the tide with headway at about 2 kts, but it did not overheat. Under load it maxxed out at 2000 rpms.
Next I have to clean the prop and shaft of the growth (I didn't have time to coat them with anything due to cutlass replacement)
I will keep a tender ear to it. Thanks,
Gary
