Anti-Fouling Lower Unit, CD25

Post by John M Freeman »

Looking to see if anyone has had any success with antifouling products on outboard lower units. Here in Hampton Roads we must have the most nutrient rich water ever known to mankind, it seems that no matter what product you use, the growth just keeps on coming. Some products even seem to encourage growth. The only true solution I have come up with is to pull the outboard between sails, but that is impractical considering the engine well of the CD25.

The best product I found so far for those nasty creatures still can not keep them off over 4 or 5 weeks in New Haven Harbor. twice a season I raise the outboard onto the well and with the lightest scraping they slide off. It's the clear outdrive spray they sell at boatUS ( I think the only one they sell since I saw no other clears). It seems to make them slide off making cleaning easier. I used the black spray from trilux last year with many coats and and midway through the season my outdrive was twice it's size when I pulled it out and those guys were hanging on for dear life. Someone here uses stove black and you can search the board for those discussions.

Good luck and happy motoring !

I'm doing a test with my wife's cooking. If it keeps my prop clear of living organisms I'll let you all know. You can come over for dinner sometime and take doggy bags home to smear on your boats.

John,
I have had problems in the past. I used Tempo clear spray antifouling and it was terrible. I have tried Micron33 in spray it was so, so. This year I am trying Trilux brush on. The paint has teflon in it. No barnicles. The outboard leg does get a slight fuzzy growth that comes clean with a quick wipe of a soft brush. So far no barnicles. With the hot summer and no rain the harbor is like bath water so I think its a good report.

Correction.. it was Micron33 not trilux that I used first and had nasty results.

I thought things would be different way up there on the east coast, because of cooler temperatures. Down here is Texas-- pull the motor! What do you think is growing on the inside of the cooling system.
