cd 25 sail gate

Post by keith »

I'm having lots of fun with the boom poping out of the sailgate when I lower my sails or try to use the cunnungham . Anyone found a good way to keep the boom/gooseneck in the mast ?

Keith, from what you are saying, it sounds as if the boom is riding above the gate; is that correct? On the small boats that I have owned, the gooseneck fit into the sail track, like the 25, but it slid down the track and was held there by a downhaul, preventing it from lifting up into the gate or above. Does your boat have such a downhaul? If not, how do you get the luff tight?

Maybe I am missing something, but I think you simply need a downhaul on that gooseneck or a slug stop in the track above the gooseneck to keep the boom from riding up the track.

Keep on sailing,

Sounds like you need a downhaul on the boom. If the gooseneck is loose and slides into the track along the mast, then you need a downhaul. This should keep the boom below the gate and from popping out. A short piece of line on the boom and to a cleat on the mast will do.

Good luck.

I'm also using a stop slug above and below the boom slide. This lets me use the original downhaul cleat as a cunningham/forward reef cleat (I have enough line on an S hook, with block, to do either.) If I need extra security, I can short-tie a line from my vang bail to the downhaul ring on the boom fitting.....though I only do this on "heavy air" days. I also made aluminum plates, screwed into the mast, to close the gate.

The device you need is a "Track Stop with a round slide". You can find them on page 1018 of the West Marine 2002 Catalog.
.
I'm curious, When you raise the main, you say the bottom of the sail ( attached to the boom ) will ride up over the opening for the mast gate? If this is so I think your main sail may have been shortened for some reason (repair maybe). Otherwise the sail would be so baggy from having the boom so high that you would have trouble holding the wind.
.
What keeps the boom from lowering all the way to the deck when you lower the main sail?(provided it does not come out the gate on the way down) There should be a track stop about 10 inches below the gate to keep the boom from coming all the way to the deck. Then I have one just below the gate. The gooseneck can only travel those ten inches(it muight be a foot) between the track stops the downhaul helps determine where, exactly.
.
You will need a third track stop that you put just above the gate to keep the sail slugs in the track when you lower the main sail. I'm guessing that since the boom can come out, that the rest of the sail follows in coming out of the track. the alterntive to the third stop is the make/buy a mast gate that covers the opening, allowing you to reef the main without taking out the upper track stop.
.
Unless your baot or sails have been modified in some way I can't think of, these three little things at $7.50 each are really going to change things for the better. I bought an extra one just in case I get fumble fingers.
Good luck and happy sailing!
