Looking For Tidewater Virginia Cape Dory Owners

Post by John M Freeman »

Looking for other Cape Dory owners in the lower Chesapeake Bay: Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News and other areas close by. Thinking about trying to organize events and get togethers, possibly petition to form a new fleet in the CDSOA, it will all depend on the amount of responses I get. I have seen a few Cape Dorys around the area, but have not met the owners. I am at Nautical Boats Marina in Portsmouth, wanting to hear from any CD owners that might be interested.

Have you tried contacting Al Evans (Fleet Captain of CDSOA for Chesapeake)? There will be a cruise 6July-12July (Great Wicomico, Onancock, Piankatank,Rappahanock, Indian Creek, Crisfield & Solomons). Should be a great cruise.
Let me know if you are interested.

Hi, I just purchased a 28 Cape Dory. Moved it down from Deltaville to Norfolk. I'm located at Taylor's Landing in Little Creek. There are two other CD's at the marina but I have not meet the owners.

John,
I've got a CD30K that I keep across the river at Freemason, and there's a CD30C three slips down.

Let me know how your response turns out.

David

yes i have seen postings for that cruise, but the times are bad for me, and the distance is pretty far. thats why i am interested in forming a group in the southern end of the bay, seems that most of the "chesapeake" fleet is all at the northern end. i have tried to e mail al evans, but my e account won't mail to his. i contacted the cdsoa secretary and tried to have her forward me e mail to him. hopefully if i get enough response, we can form a southern fleet of the cdsoa.

Where is Freemason? Is it on the portsmouth side or norfolk side? i am familiar with the marinas in the area, but this one eludes me. i am spending this week going to the various area marinas and posting flyers, have had two great responses so far.

Tom,
I am pretty familiar with the marinas on little creek, i used to do some work out of there. i will be posting flyers there tomorrow, which dock are you on? talk to your neighbors if you can, see how much interest is there at taylor's landing. i will be going by the marinas at little creek tomorrow to drop off flyers; going by cobb's, know of at least one CD25 there, will visit bay marine and bay point as well. i can use all the help i can get getting this thing rolling, and i plan to talk to my friends at West Marine and BoatUs to help in any way they can. as it stands, ports events in portsmouth has agreed to give us our own class in the next cock island race, i was miserably out classed this year, so we might be a bit more competative when against our own kind, apples to apples per se.

John -

A CDSOA fleet for the Southern Chesapeake Bay makes a lot of sense. Go for it! The Chesapeake Fleet currently has members scattered the whole length of the Bay. If we establish three fleets (Northern, Middle, and Southern), each could plan localized activities, and we could still have one or two All-Chesapeake events each season. Of course, any member could still participate in any of the local events without regard to fleet affiliation.

Suggest that you discuss with the Commodore, John Sill. His e-mail: Johnesill@cs.com. Also, please plan to attend the Ground Hog Day Extravaganza in Solomons, MD in early February, 2003. Among other things, that's our fleet annual meeting where we discuss and finalize cruise plans for the year.

Fleet Captain, Chesapeake
