How much $ to replace Ty rub/toe rails?

Post by Sean Morgan »

I was wondering if anyone has ever looked into the cost involved with replacing the wooden rub and toe rails on a Ty? I know what the work involved would be, but not a clue about the cost.

Has anyone here either done it or looked into it?

Take a look at Greg Jones' article on Retrofitting a Typhoon (Tradition and Stability in a Small Package), pages 78-79, and 86, in the March 2001 issue of Sailing Magazine.

I went to a local lumber yard and bought 4 10 foot 1x3 teak boards for about $150. I ripped each one in half, eased the edges with a router. I counter-sunk the screws used to attach the rub rails and used screws with rounded tops for the toe rails, no bungs. Total cost < $200, including sealant/adhesive. Including prep, about a two day job.

Good luck and fair winds,

Sean:

For the complete set, $450 plus tax and shipping - the toe and rub rails come in two 10' lengths with a scarf joint pre-cut (so we can ship UPS). I believe we have a set in stock, including toe rails with scuppers pre-cut in the aft section.

How bad is your rubrail/toerail?

When we got our Typhoon (#365) this year the teak look horrible, gray and very grainy, instead of replacing it, we first washed it with a enviro safe teak cleaner 2X, and then sanded it with 60 grit and 150 grit. We finished it with cetol. The boat looks great for a fraction of the cost. The job went quickley.
