For the last couple of years I have been looking to purchase a typhoon. I came across what I believe to be a solid craft this past weekend. It was made in 1969. Overall the boat/sails looks to be a good shape. It's the weekend version. I'm a bit concerned that the port holes have been converted to operstional plastic vs original brass. Does this hurt the resale value of the boat? I also noticed that the deck supports located in the cabin seem to be seperating a bit. It comes with a 4.4 Merc outboard that runs well. Selling price: $2,900. Are my concerns justified? What else should I be looking out for? Your experience/comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Mark

Re: Considering the purchase of a typhoon
Mark,
Early model so some stress here and there to be expected. Port lights can be redone and there are lots of postings here on ideas. For the separation that you are seeing inside the cabin, you should really consider having it surveyed. Hard to judge without enough experience. Price sounds a bit high if that separation issue takes any real work to fix. A good trailer may help justify the price.
Deck original or epoxy paint? That plus the teak are the areas that you will end up putting a lot of work into. Also rigging. When was the standing rigging replaced etc? Compression post installed in the cabin?
We obviously agree with your choice of designs but a survey is a good idea for a 35 year old boat just so you don't get serious surprises.
Just some rambling thoughts.
