Yamaha 9.9 pee

Post by Rich »

I'm sure I've asked this question before, but how much cooling flow should I be seeing from my 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9? I get a steady drip, should I see a stronger stream than this?

Rich,

I only know from larger engines, so I don't know to the extent it applies to you, but at idle you should typically get a constant "spitting," but once you've throttled-up the flow should be a steady stream, like a small faucet.

After the winter, when I haven't gotten this stronger stream, carefully clearing the tube out with a long strand of wire while running has spit out bugs and the like, and a strong stream follows.

Rich,

Mud Daubers and other insects like to winter over in small places like that. I agree with Brian that you ought to be getting a very steady stream of fairly warm water from that engine even at idle. Either the pump is in need of a new impeller, the hose has become disconnected, or the hose and/or cooling passages are plugged. Get it fixed before you have much more expensive problems.

Ken,

This string made me think -- how would you describe the optimal exhaust flow on a Perkins 4-108?

Perkins 4-108 Belching

Post by Ken Coit »

Brett,

I am not sure about "optimal," but our Perkins 4-108 runs at design temp under ordinary loads; at roughly 1000 RPM she is belching a gallon or so of water every few seconds, maybe even every second. I can't say that I had thought to measure it before this, but I do look every time I start the blue monster to see that it is belching about the same as the last time. I think that a better measure of whether the flow is adequate is to watch the temperature gauge.

I have a 9.9 four stroke Yamaha. It is a steady stream whether ideling or full throtle.
