CD25-suggest engines?

Post by jordanSchiffer »

I just need a simple, decent engine for a CD25, and am uncertain what to buy. I dont need the highest performance, but by the same token, am not looking particularly to save money. I just want a very reliable, acceptably powered, engine that FITS.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jordan

I am happy with my long shaft nissan 6, though unlike the 2 strokes you can only lay on its back without running the risk of the engine oil draining out. However its relativly quiet and I can run it with the lazzeret closed.

I am very happy with the Tohatsu [Nissan in disguise] 8 two cycle engine. It is around 60 pounds and has an exhaust that exits through the propeller hub which means that you can run it with the lazarette hatch closed. It is also an electric start with a generator to charge the battery. The physical fit is good as well.

Good luck with your search.

Jordan,
We bought a 8hp Tohatsu w/ electric start 2 stroke. Same as a Nissan. Much lighter and smaller than a four stroke. Fits no problem. No modsThe only to check for is the out board tiller handle. We have a wheel no tiller so the tiller handle can't come forward anyway. Plenty of power.

Can someone tell me what would be the aproximate fuel burn with a 6-8 hp engine in a CD 25? I am contiplating a long trip which will be mostly motoring, and wonder how much gas I need to carry.

A gallon an hour is about what I average at full throttle.

Ron,

It depends on what you call a long trip. On my CD26, I had a 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9 electric start, which I have used to motor sail from Mattapoisett to Niantic, Ct. I would carry two cans, One, a six gallon can, the other, a three gallon can. both cans store easily in rear lazarette or one stored on top. In either case, I would use about three to four gallons for the trip.

What you might want to do is to take a short motor trip on a measured course, figure the consumption and then multiply it for a measured long trip. Hope this helps.
