Please help - Camp Zinc to replace Perry for CD27???

Post by Jessica »

I saw John R. and Scott's exchange from last month on this topic, but I want to verify before I buy a zinc sight-unseen!

We have a 1983 CD27 which has a new stanless shaft (in 2000). The boat yard that did the work replaced the zinc with a Perry Nut zinc. When we had it hauled this weekend, we looked in Annapolis to replace the zinc, but not only couldn't find one, everyone acted like this was completely unknown to them! After seeing John R's advice on buying a Camp PN-3 or PN-4 zinc for a CD30, I called around (Defender doesn't have them) and found them at General Propeller Company (www.gpcprop.com) for $13.65 for the entire kit (brass and zinc).

Is this definitely going to work for us???? I appreciate your help! We're looking to get the boat back in the water ASAP, if it wasn't for the zinc, we'd have it in our slip already!

Thanks!

Camp Zinc

Post by John R. »

Jessica,

The Camp prop zincs will work just fine for you but you must know what shaft diameter you have in the CD27. I don't know what size shaft the CD27 uses. The Camp PN-3 or PN-4 fits a 1" shaft. You have to purchase the nut kit and the zinc separately. Camp does not sell them in a kit.
The nuts (one hex and one castellated) come in a package together and are sold under part # PN-3 or PN-4 to fit a 1" shaft.

The zinc component is sold separately but also under the same part numbers as above. It can be confusing.

I question the $13.65 price you were quoted on the "entire kit" from General Propeller Company. That just sounds like the nut kit with the two bronze nuts. They retail at $14.99 for a 1" shaft size. The zinc itself is another $11.00.

So, the Camp components to install a complete zinc unit on a 1" shaft should be about $26.00 retail. You will also need a cotter pin.

I will email you pictures of the Camp zinc and nuts so you will fully understand what I am talking about.

John -

Thanks for the information!!! I specifically asked if the zinc included the bronze nuts, and she checked and then said "Yes, it is a total kit." But I will verify that it has the bronze and zinc parts! How annoying would it be to get only half of what I need!? It is a 1" shaft (according to my husband), but the threads on the bronze Perry Nut are only 3/4 inch. Does that make sense?

Again, thanks!

Yes, that is correct. The 1" shaft on the CD is a 3/4" USS thread #10 RH (right hand).

The reason there is confusion by retailers or distributors when describing the Camp zinc is because the two nuts are described as a "kit" and the zinc is listed separately but Camp makes it appear in their listings that the zinc is included in the nut kit which it isn't. At least that is the case here in Florida with various distributors.

I sent you complete photos of the 1" Camp assembly and a 1" Perry Nut for comparison.

I am working with BoatZincsDirect to make a replacement for the Perry Nut. I expect they will have the project completed certainly by next season. It would be helpful if you expressed your interest to Martin Wiggs at boatzincsdirect.com.

Camp Zinc (Size C) $6.99 @ Hamilton Marine

Post by Dave Potts »

I'm not sure if these are the exact same animals as I don't see any reference to a PN-3 or PN-4 in their product numbering system (they use a lettering system instead), but Hamilton Marine carries Camp zincs. I use size "C", which is for 1" to 1 1/8" shafts with a 3/4" NC 10 thread.

Hamilton sells the zinc for $6.99 <a href=http://www.cpostores.com/hamiltonmarine ... ,0,0,0.htm>(see zinc listing here)</a> and the bronze nut for $26.49 <a href=http://www.cpostores.com/hamiltonmarine ... ,0,0,0.htm> (see nut listing here)</a>.

Different zinc

Post by John R. »

Dave,

the zinc you link to is the "Martyr" style like the one made by Canada metals and Electro Guard. This is the zinc that is known to have problems with the retaining screw coming loose. See the archives on this board for more posts on this subject.

The Camp zinc PN-3 or PN-4 (or known as the PN series of zincs) is a total different animal, it has no retaining screw, it uses a cotter pin like the Perry Nut to hold it securely in place. One of these days I will get some photos I have uploaded to a web page so people can see the zinc I have been refering to. In the meantime if you want a picture sent to your email just post a request.
