Storm Jibs

Post by Peter K. »

Recently there was a storm sail (a headsail) for sale on this website. While I put in a bid for it it was gone before I could get it. It made me think. A smaller headsail such as a storm jib would be very useful when the winds kick up. I assume that there is no such thing as a special storm jib for Cape Dorys, but wonder if there is a way of determining an appropriate size for my particular model of Cape Dory (CD26)? I have found used storm jibs for sale on the web, but am not sure what size would be appropriate. Also, since such a sail would be used when the winds are severe, are there guidelines for the construction of such a sail? Any thoughts on this? Any ideas of where to purchase one that does not cost an arm and a leg?
Thanks,

Peter, I purchased my CD 28 in 2001 and it came with all the original sails and included a brand new, unused Storm Jib. I'll be on the boat later today to see who made it. This boat has always been in Rhode Island and I'll bet it was Thurston or Hood. I'll get back to you today or tomorrow.

I found a very interesting storm sail. It's a GAIL SAIL from TN. It wraps around the furled headsail. Comes in various sizes from 60sq ft up. Do a web search for GAIL SAIL. Anyone have experience with this sail?

My storm jib is new and came from Thurston Sails in Bristol, RI.

Call for Steve Thurston.
