I have removed the original illegal head from my new 75 Ty. I am left with a pair of very old gate valves. I was going to simply plug the valves to avoid disturbing them and the thru hull fittings. Is this a good solution or can anyone offer a better/proper fix.

head removal/ remaining gate valves

My recommendation is that you remove them all together. I would further recommend that you replace them with appropriate seacocks or marine grade UL approved ball valves . I assume the gate valves are simply threaded onto a thru hull in some fashion. There can potentially be a problem here because people have been known to force thread gate valves (with tapered thread) onto thru hulls (with straight thread). If that's the case then the thru hull threads are ruined and you would have to replace the thru hulls as well to install updated seacocks.ken price wrote: I have removed the original illegal head from my new 75 Ty. You need to do some homework and figure out what degree of Pandoras Box you are faced with. Post more info about the current installation and we can probably advise better or maybe someone else already has dealt with the same situation in another Ty. I don't know if CD installed gate valves back in the '70's or if a private party installed them in your boat.
