Bronze/Brass Rub-rails/strakes/strips

Anyone have a source for either the half-oval rubrails and rubstrakes or strips used to protect teak? There are 2 different things I'm looking for....the bigger gauge stuff for the rubrail and then the smaller, more finished stuff for along top the toerail around cleats and perhaps along the shrouds where I sometimes step up and over. West marine has the smaller stuff in stainless, but I know I've seen it out there in either bronze or brass.....anyone got an idea?

Pat,

Woodenboat magazine will have several different bronze hardware suppliers listed. I think there was one called Clark that used to have it. Try contacting the various ones listed in the mag. I think you can still get it from ABI but I'm not sure. The 1/2" bronze half round I have on our 30 I believe I got from ABI several years back but I may have obtained it from another source I was dealing with at the time. It wasn't cheap back then and the shipping was pretty bad, weight plus the length. Another source would be a major marine wholesaler in your area (the guys your local marine businesses purchase from), check some of their wholesale catalogs. Try Buck Algonquin, Perko, Wilcox, Hamilton, or Waterline.

The larger stuff is probably going to be more difficult to find in bronze. Maybe the guys from Bristol Bronze can give you a couple leads also.

The bronze half round is becoming harder to find, wooden or traditional craft seem to be the only market anymore, the suppliers are drying up on that sort of stuff. Mostly stainless is the material of the day.

Pat,

I've purchased 3/4' wide by 15' long bronze oval stock from a local marine supply house for about $2.00 a foot. I live in Massachusetts. You should be able to do the same in CA. Ask a local boatyard. It's easy to cut with a hacksaw and drill with a portable power drill. I've added over 25' of protective strips to the teak on my CD-36 Journey' End.

Dear Pat,

The item that you are looking for is Bronze half oval. We supply it all the time. It is available in either six or twelve foot lengths. (The twelve foot lengths are much more expensive to ship.) It is made in alloy 385 Architectural Bronze. This is the same alloy that you will find on public buildings. It is not the strongest alloy in the world but it will surfice as a rub strip.
