Tuning a Typhoon rig

Post by Mike Wainfeld »

Does anyone have any tips for tuning the rig on a Typhoon Weekender? When sighting up the mast it veers to starboard. I corrected by tightening the port upper, but I'm worried about making the shrouds too tight. How tight should they be? Any way to measure? How tight should the lowers be? Thanks!

Too tight can produce too much downward force on the step/cabin top so without a compression post problems can arise. (Forgive the soap box). I was chastised by Jocelyn Nash at Quantum Sails for having my rig too loose. She had me bring the shrouds snug. I could still deflect them with a pull, and you couldn't twang them by any means. Up wind the lee shrouds are still quite loose, but at mooring there is no movement in the mast as the boat rocks back and forth. Does that help?
