Monitor wind vane

Post by Ernie Smith »

I am considering the purchase of a monitor wind vane for CD 330. Anyone have experience with this unit on the 330, and provide any guidance/recommendations? Any used units available?

i installed one on my CD31 - best piece of equipment i've added to the boat - the instruction manual for installation was easy to follow - it's incredibly strong, i stand on it often getting on and off the boat - i had to remove the stern ladder, no great loss - it does everything the literature says it will sailing - it has steered the boat under bare poles for example

if you can see one on a boat, it will help you install one - also, it is important to get it vertical

feel free to email me directly if you have other questions

There is a timely article on windvane steering in the May/June issue of Good Old Boat beginning on page 44. Many models of windvane steering are reviewed, including Monitor. Great publication to subscribe to.

We had one installed on our cd 33 this winter and are quite pleased with it. We went with a new unit but a used one would work-you might need Scanmar to make some new supports as they are quite specific to the boat. Email if you would like some photos of the vane installed. We used the person who does most of Scanmars installations and he did a great job leading the lines to the wheel.
