sailing in the northwest

Post by John Phillips »

One of my daughters has accepted a position in Portland, Oregon and I am curious how sailing is in the northwest. Particularly in the off season. I own a marina, so April to the end of September means no trips. Is there time for anything in the off season?

Off-season (winter) sailing in the northwest...

Good news: unlike in the northeast, there is no reason to pull the boat out for the winter, as it rarely freezes at sea level here. So, you can sail year-round.

Bad news: in the winter, you will probably be sailing under overcast skies in a very cold rain, i.e., you probably wont want to be out there!

I'am a native Oregonian, a minority to be sure.. Many people who move here love it and stay. No sales tax. But state income and property taxes are steep. Tax measures and trying to balance a budget have taken severe toll on the public schools. Sail boarding mecca up river in Hood River area, the columbia gorge winds.
