BOOT STRIPE HELP?!

Post by Mike Raehl »

I've started preparing the bottom for new antifouling paint and decided to first strip and re-paint the boot stripe. Two questions:

There is an accent striping tape just above the painted boot stripe. It is a bronze mettalic tape that has been on the hull for some time and is very difficult to get off. Small sections peel off in layers like cellophane but most of it stays on the hull. It does not respond to the Inerlux Interstrip I'm using for the painted stripe. Any suggestions on how to get it off?

Stripped off most of the painted boot stripe and uncovered an earlier stripe that is about two inches lower on the hull from mid-ship to the bow. Seems to follow a different, lower water line. If this is the original Cape Dory applied boot stripe, is it a more accurate representation of the true water line when the boat is in the water?

I have had success with a good engine degeaser on very old masking tape...problem here is the tape is probably water proof but you can try a small section. The lower stripe is probably the CD factory stripe. Many folks, myself included, have raised their stripes slightly because it was actually too close to the water to keep clean and the back end of CDs traditionally swat in the back below the CD factory water line. AKA, a problem with an actuate level boot stripe as it sits in the water. This exposes the hull to growth. However I had taken my old boot stripe off completely and left no trace...

A heat gun and putty knife will often work where other stippers don't.

Heat and gentle pressure with a putty knife are the best thing for the vinyl stripe; use a citrus-based cleaner or 3M Adhesive Remover on the goo that is left behind.

re: started preparing the bottom for new the boot stripe.

For an even boot line above the water....I used the scum line left on the old bottom paint as a guideline and marked the bootstripe 3 inches above that mark. Saved me from having to level the boat on the hard. Quick, easy, and back in the water

Automobile service stations and some marinas have this handy rotating wheel that takes off vehicle inspection stickers and registration stickers and numbers. It's not an abrasive wheel but a wheel made out of a type of material that is similar to a pencil eraser. The spinning eraser removes the sticker without harming the gelcoat. Perhaps you can ask where they are available or maybe an auto supply company can send you one. They really do the job well! I had the numbers removed from my O'Day Daysailer III when I took the stinkpot off her for good.

Probably not. The previous owner evidently raised the boot because he was carrying enough gear to lower the hull in the water by the amount you now see. If you intend to load the average amount of "stuff" (which unfortunately will be quite a lot) then leave the boot where it is. I have over the years raised my boot twioe due the the load of cruising gear that has somehow come aboard.

Plastic stripes can be removed with a one sided razor blade. The tougher ones will need a little help from a heat gun. You really need to take your time, and understand it could take a while.

use a hairdryer. . .the tape should just peel off. I tried it on a boat I once owned and it worked like magic! If there is glue residue just wipe it off with acetone then rinse with water. A hairdryer will also take off any old decal or vinyl type like reg. numbers or boat name.
