CD10 hull numbers.....

Post by John Nuttall »

.....Seems to me there HAS been some discussion on this, BUT a search of the archives didn't turn up anything. So I have to ask if anyone can inform me of the location of the hull numbers on my newly acquired CD10? There are no markings on the transom.

John,

Is there a builder's plate? Our 14 has a plate on the inside of the port side of the transom with a blank box in which to stamp a number. The number is actually still there, but it is mostly unreadable. I had to do a rubbing to lift it off.

John:

If you don't have a plate as described by Ken, then you are unlikely to find the number anywhere else, as that is the only place I have found it on my CD10. The plate on my #413 is clearly marked and in good condition. As you will notice by the registry, no one seems to have been able to come up with precise dates of production for the various hull numbers.

Are you referring to the HIN or the Hull number? On my CD10, the HIN was manually engraved on the upper right corner of the transom, with a Dremel tool or the like. The builder's plate has only the hull number, not the HIN. The hull number makes up a portion of the HIN. Mine is a late model (1989).

If you have the hull number, Robinhood may have records to cross-reference the HIN. Failing that, I believe that most state motor vehicle departments have a process to assign a HIN to antique, homebuilt, one-off and other instances where there was no manufacturer-assigned HIN. Even if you're not planning to register your CD10, it could be helpful for identification purposes, insurance, etc.

If you have neither a hull number nor a HIN, it may be next to impossible to pinpoint exactly when it was built, although an expert at Robinhood with knowledge of any manufacturing, hardware or design modifications over the years might be able to guage its age.

John:

I have just purchased a CD 10. The hull Number starts out with CPDA, then the hull number, then a letter, then a 2 digit number (the year) then a letter. The number should be on the starboard side of the transom at the top. Most builders also mold in another number somewhare on the hul (this is most offten placed under the rub rail) for future identafacation. One of the letters is the month of manufacture. A = January, etc.

Good luck with this.
