Mounting wood to inner hull

Post by Lyle Lunson »

Hello All,

I have recently redesigned my plumbing system. One problem that I have is that the vented loop really needs to be relocated to a position off of the bulkhead where it is presently screwed in. Has anyone ever attached a piece of wood to the inner hull to use as a place to mount ? Any tips on what to use ? Epoxy ? Glue ?

Thanks

5200 works great although it is quite permanent

Lyle,

The fast cure 4200 Adhesive/sealant from 3M which is a one part polyurethane seems to work very well and can actually be removed at a later date whithout taking extreme measures. Do not use the 5200 which is twice as strong, but a real bear to remove. A three ounce tube is about $8.49. I find after using a little its difficult to seal the tube without it hardening up in the neck ie, buy small tubes for your jobs like this.

attached a piece of mahogony to the bilge sidewall (fiberglass) with west system epoxy for hanging my rule 500 bilge pump. has been wet a few times and is still holding tight.

Are you just mounting a piece of tubing that is small? I had numerous wires to run under the cockpit sole, coax to get to the GPS, and a copper vent line to move in the bow. Answer? Hot glue gun!! Stuff is awsome. No wood block needed, no clips, no holes and nothing damaged if you rip it loose. Very fast and easy....and if you think it won't last, you should see the lower concrete step on my mom's front porch....that she glued back together 8 years ago (in Colorado winters).

Same stuff I used for my wood cockpit locker seal strips. They're holding up great and DO NOT LEAK! I just learned they now make a flexible version for mounting things that need to flex a little....what'll they think of next!?

try Liquid Nails

The heavy duty flavor of Liquid Nails construction adhesive would do what you want...its inexpensive, if fills voids and its waterproof...

Mounting wood to inner hull

Post by Dana »

My experience with this I installed wooden "sringers" to which I could install ash and teak ceiling battens through the interior. I had curved sections and straight sections of the side of the interior hull to do. I used a good bedding compound between the wood and the hull. If the hull was curved I cut horizontal cuts into the backside of the wood so it could bend to the curve of the hull. I laid two layers of fiberglass with epoxy resin to form an N over the wooden with about an 1-1/2" overlap on each side of the wood onto the hull. You can screw whatever you want into it as long as it does not exceed the thickness of the wood. The bedding prevents a "hard spot" from forming on the outside of the hull....

My ceiling is still holding up fine since 85...
