CD25 Rudder repair Follow up

Post by Jim Myers »

Well I have had the rudder repaired. It was definately not a home repair as the boat had to be lifted high enough for the rudder post to clear the hull as it was being removed and again to be reinstalled. The reglassing of the stock to the rudder was straight forward enough. The guys at Brewers did an excellent job. The cost was $650.00. It does mean that some of the work I was planning for this year will happen next year but I am very happy to not worry about my rudder not being where it should be!

Jim, I just bought a 1976 CD25 in Bristol, RI and the top of the rudder shaft is exposed (maybe 1/2 inch). I assumed this was not a big deal, but is this what you also saw that led to your repair? If the boat goes in the water this season in that condition, could I lose the rudder? Thanks for the info.

Jim, could you draw us a picture or describe the internal structure of the rudder? As I understand you, the fiberglass portion was sliding off of the inner structure (web?). I'm trying to imagine the rudder post and what attaches to it.....remembering a post a while back about a Typhoon losing it's rudder. When I stripped my boat for new bottom paint, there was no fiberglass wrapped around the rudder shaft, but the rudder was really tight when I was yanking on it (looking for looseness in the bearings). Thanks for any more info you can give us!
