I finally got around to looking for your recommended Rutland Stove Black today as I want to run some tests using it down here in Ft. Myers Florida on the southwest coast. We have very high fouling waters here and I feel this would be an excellent area to test the stove blacks effectiveness. We are just entering our warmer weather and so fouling should start increasing as the Gulf waters warm.
I found Rutlands products at a "Do It Best" hardware store. However the product I found is not called "stove black", it is called "Rutland Stove & Grill Polish". It is in a small 8 oz. can with a white label with black and red printing. The Rutland product number is SP8, is this the correct product that you have used? On their computer system they showed one other polish from Rutland called simply "Rutland Stove Polish", which comes in a small plastic bottle container.
The "stove and grill polish" that I purchased ($4.84)is for use on unpainted cast iron and steel according to the label. It states the following on the back of the can:
"This solvent-free, water based polish gives a lustrous, black protective finish to unpainted cast iron or steel. It is heat and weather resistant. Ideal for stoves and grills, and irons, stove pipe, wrought iron, fireplace and garden tools. Does not smoke during heating."
Is this the product you are using and have recommended?

Re: It may be an old container....
John,
What you described is almost the same as what is on the plastic bottle of polish I use. Go to rutland.com, look under polish/paint, check item 73. That is it...........

I took a look at their page of polishes and I don't see any difference between the SP8 and the 73. They are both polishes for unpainted cast iron stove components. Being that their description is so vague I am going to call Rutland tomorrow and get the facts on both products and indeed see if there is any real differences. Obviously they are some sort of penetrating waxes but comprised of what else? It seems like it is just a packaging difference between the two based on their website info and the info I obtained off the hardware store computer description.
The yellow Williams container shown on their website as the SP8 is marketed at the hardware store in the white, red, black label I described in the earlier post.
I'll make a follow up post with what I learn from speaking with the company tomorrow.
