boat soap
What do you guys use to wash down the hull? Our new old CD25 won't get the complete buff and polish this spring but we want her to look good. Not much has been done with her for a couple of years and with a fixed launch date (they bring in a crane for one day only)we have to prioritize. The hull is chalky, but I was told that a good soap followed with some wax and elbow grease would go a long way...
How about product like Lestoil or Spic and Span?

If you really want a product that will work great, do the job in minutes, and not break the bank, try Starbrite Deck Cleaner! Costs about $6.00 a pint, and will last you two seasons.
We live by one of the largest refineries in the Northwest (Anacortes) and we do have a problem with residue on boats. Takes about ten minutes to do a Cape Dory 28 with this stuff, as well as removing all the green stuff that seems to grow on our boats during the winter months of RAIN.

Re: boat soap
Sounds like you need rubbing compound more than a bath. I just did Allia with 3M compound this weekend and she looks new.

This may seem a bit on the excessive side but it worked beautifully. I reworked all the top side of my cd 30 last year inlcuding cockpit forward bulkhead, excluding the non-skid all around. I started with I believe 600 grit sand paper, hand held and with orbital sander then progressed to the finish with a 2000 grit sandpaper, the very thin film of dust created by sanding was wiped with tack cloth between sandings. By the time you reach the 2000 grit stage the glass is looking like a mirror, finish off with a fine rubbing compound then several coats of a good wax. You may get a raised eyebrow or two from the dockside admirals. But when you finish its a real eye popper. I never even approached blowing through the gelcoat. that chalky look you mentioned is gone. Heres the rub... I burned about 20 hours for the project.
My marina is located two miles from a major airport and there is all kinds of crud that settles on deck, a quick hose down, light coat of wax makes it look brand new.
Best of luck Ben

I am not sure where I picked this up-probably on this board-but believe it or not-toilet bowl cleaner-the gel kind-that is thick and stays on the hull-is superb-then proceed to wet sand and compound and wax-p.s.-this is guaranteed to raise a few eyebrows in the yard-but I swear by it!BenThomas wrote:EdEd Killlian wrote: What do you guys use to wash down the hull? Re: boat soap
I read Beth Leonard's cruising book and she suggested Soft Scrub for spot cleaning, especially stubborn stains and dirt. We've been using it with generally good results. It even removed some rust spots the mechanic accidentally left.
