Original Cost of a Cape Dory

Post by David Low »

Yesterday as I was "doing teak" on my 1980 CD 30, a question jumped into my head.

Does anyone know the original sales prices of the various Cape Dory models.

Dave

The number of around $30,000 sticks in my head as I remember seeing them at the 1980 N.E. Boat Show. Other folks may have a better number however.

There was a recent post that included a price list. It was later than 1980, but fairly complete. Do a search and it ought to come up. Also, when we bought a 1985 CD 28 used several years ago the original bill of sale was about $55,000 including a number of extras. List was around 50K as I recall.

Dave,

The Cape Dory 30 I purchased 1985 with sails, instruments, VHF radio,ie sailaway complete was right at 60,000 dollars. I might add the 15 years I owned her she never let me down. I own a 36 now and will be expecting the same great boat only more room and comfort. We are taking her down the ditch to the Bahamas in early September of this year from Groton, CT.

I have a price sheet dated January 1, 1989 for both the CD330 and CD36 models.

For a CD330, base price was $95,990. With all the normal options, the sailaway price was $102,900 plus tax.

For a CD36, base price was $114,990. With all the normal options, the sailaway price was $121,900 plus tax.

What I'd like to know is a history of the used selling price over the years. I'm pretty sure the CDs have held their own and have been increasing in value for the last dozen years or so.

Some of us don't like Practical Sailor much, but they do publish their idea of historical prices for many boats. The 1992 edition of Practical Boat Buying reviewed the CD/30 and showed price histories of a '78 and an '84 model. The '84 originally sold for $50K (no options)and is shown as being worth $36K in '92. The '78 originally sold for $30K and is shown as being worth $26K in '92. I don't think they have depreciated much since then! They may even have appreciated.

The 25 and 25D are also reviewed. Their price history, for an '82 model, shows a peak in '86 of about double the $7500 and $15000 original 1982 price, and they were both still worth $2-3K more in '92 than the originl price.

I scanned the book to see if anything has appreciated over the long term and found some interesting boats: Hinkley Bermuda 40 (but it is in decline after 1990; Crealock 37 took a dip around '88, but was rising towards original price in '92; 1976 Pearson 35 did very well from '76 to '86, quadrupling in price, but it declined to only 3X by '92 (did your investments do that well?); Beneteau First 345 did well from '85 to '88, but has been in decline since; Tartan 34 close to flat from '78 to '92; Tartan 33 similar from '80 to '92; etc., etc. and so forth. I am sure I missed some others that have held their price well.

According to papers found in our 1981 CD 33, the original owner paid nearly $80K.

Re: 1984 price list

Post by Ed Roberts »

Due to a lot of inflation since 1984, the numbers in Mike's price list should be multiplied by 1.7 in order to compare them with today's prices. Thus, the original cost of a 1984 25D, stated in 2002 dollars was $24,000 x 1.7 = $40,800. This is the number that should be used to calculate depreciation.
