s/v vs s/y

Post by Joel »

I read somewhere that the designation s/v is used to precede the name of a commercial sailing vessel and that s/y should be used for recreational sailing yacht. Has anyone else heard of this, perhaps our Nautical Traditions Officer?

Yes, I've read that too

Yes, a commercial sailing craft should be referred to as a "sailing vessel" and pleasure craft as "sailing yachts" but I really don't think it matters that much.

Captain Bondy,

that post on another site. Reason, Hanalei has no crew in matching white duck trousers with blue waistcoats and lacquered black hats. If ya wants something ta drink, or something to eat, ya know where the vittles are! The Captain truly does man the helm, and HE is responsible for everything that goes on aboard! There are no lounge chairs on deck, and everyone bunks together(or at least in two seperate cabins!)

Nah Sir, I beg your understanding, but Hanalei will remain........

Hello to All;
Well, I had the 'privilege' of being in the Army, not the Navy, so I don't know all the official 'Nautical Traditions'...but I noticed on a ball cap that my Brother-in-Law gave me, it says CV Saratoga...for 'Carrier Vessel'...with no forslash...in capital letters...wuz up?

I hate to butt in, but I WAS in the Navy (retired). C is for Carrier, V is for Aircraft, in Navy nomenclature. If it's a CVN, it's also Nuclear powered.

US Navy ships are designated letters and a number. The letters identify the type. For example, CV designates an aircraft carrier.

>>C is for Carrier, ...<<

The designation doesn't break down into individual letters. "C" is also for cruiser, CA being heavy, CL would be light, etc.
