I'm installing a boom vang on my Ty. Can anyone advise how far back from the mast should I attach it to the boom? I've read that it should be directly below the center of force of the mainsail, but that seems to me to be problematic because (1) it's variable and (2) difficult to determine.
Thanks,
Joel

Boom Location for Attaching Vang on Ty

Re: Boom Location for Attaching Vang on Ty
For best results in actualy drawing the boom down, the vang should be at a 45 degree angle to both the boom and mast. I did this with a 6:1 purchase (triple blocks, not fiddles) and the effort required is impressive. I have to head up to adjust the vang, but it's worth it. My lower attachment is a cabin roof mounted Schaeffer pad eye; the boom bail is Schaeffer too. If I were to keep the Ty beyound this year I would put a #6 winch on the cabin top just for this.

6:1! I bought a 4:1 Schaeffer vang kit based on their recommendation for boat size/sail area. Sounds like I should return it.

Re: Boom Location for Attaching Vang on Ty
joel,
original factory equipment was a 3:1 purchase. there is an eye strap attached to the lower front-side of the mast through which runs a 5/16 piece of nylon . on this rope is mounted a small block with shackle on the aft-side of the mast with a knot in the 5/16 rope. the shackle end of the small block attaches to the 5/16 rope. this setup seems preferable to a rigid bail in this location. a slotted receiver was installed in the shaefer marine boom (for which a bail can be substituted). the vang is a rope/wire combination with a wire pennant with ball-type end that slips into the receiver on the boom. to this is attached a two-part block with jam cleat. 5/16 rope constitutes the purchase. this vang is very similar to the one used on a Laser if you have ever sailed one of those. the receiver on the boom is located 32" from the aft-side of the mast. i think you will be satisfied with your 4:1 vang. if will greatly improve your downwind sailing and can be used on reaches as well to improve your sail shape.
