Stripping and vanishing TY toerails

Post by Sean M »

I am in the process of stripping off all the Cetol off our TY. I have removed all the teak except the toerails. (I'm not a masochist)

Has anyone out there revarnished thier toe rails while they were on the boat?

FWIW, I'm in the Marine retail biz, and we sell a TON of Cetol. For my taste, it is WAY too orange, it takes 6 coats to get it on right. Varnish is much prettier, longer lasting and the application process is worth the results. I'm using Interlux Schooner varnish. Great Stuff.

Sean,

I refinished my toerails on the boat last year. I put down two layers of masking tape to protect the gel coat, and sanded using an electric palm sander and a sanding sponge. Then I cleaned it with water and acetone, and used fresh masking tape for painting.

I used... cetol! It is a matter of personal preference, but I prefer sailing to repainting small scratches and dings in my brightwork.

Regards,
Richard (Typhoon "Blue Diamond")

sean,
i have to agree with richard as far as cetol for the toerails and the taffrail. as for the rest of the teak i either take it off if it's bad or leave it on for touchups and lay-on the varnish. everyone will notice the varnished teak and give you rave reviews long before they will realize the toerails have been cetoled.

I did this before last season. I totally removed all teak for refinishing, the toe rails and rub rails were in horrible shape they had been patched many times by previous owner and looked horrible. they were completly repaced with new wood and the old used as a template for the screw pattern it really wasnt that bad of a job " of course I say that now that its done" I think there is more money in teak than I paid for the boat.

I have been using West Marine's version of Armada on our teak. I think the glossy looks as good as varnish, and it's much easier to apply and doesn't chip or crack. Once a year I scruff it and apply one more coat.
