Comparison: CD25 vs CD28 under sail

Post by Micahel Phillips »

The family has outgrown our CD25 and we want something bigger.
Would love to hear from folks that have owned both. I also do
club racing with the CD25 and, after new sails, have faired
quite well. We love the looks and extra space of the CD28,
but I'm concerned as to how she will fair in PHRF racing.
Our mean wind speed in the area is 12~14 kts, but the CD25
has won her class in less than 5 kts and over 20 kts.

Can anyone relate first hand experience between the two?

Many "Thank You"s!

Michael:
I used to own a CD-28 and I curently own a CD-25D. I have raced both boats. I felt the CD-28 had a favorable PHRF rating. It seemed to me that the boat sailed better than its rating. I accumulated may trophies over the years with my "slow" CD-28! Compared to the 25, the longer waterline length of the 28 results in faster boat speed which you'll enjoy. I felt the 28 could stand up to puffs better and bull through the chop more strongly than the 25D does. I seem to have to reef sooner with the 25D. I like the placement of the winches on the 28 better then the 25D. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm going to relocate the winches on my 25D.
I made the jibboom removable without tools on the 28. I stored it on the cabintop in a teak rack I built. This allowed a clear foredeck for easy tacking of the genoa. However, in strong wind conditions, when the working jib was in order, use the jiboom allowed super close sheeting angles. I used to really surprise and annoy competitors by sailing higher than they could while using the jibboom.
Best of luck with the 28.

25 or 25D?
My wife and I used to own a 25 (not a 25D), and we have had a 28 for 5 years now, I think. The 25 was a nice boat but we much prefer the 28. We have raced neither, and cannot speak to that. Our 28 came with the jib boom already detached. We have a 130 genoa on a roller furler and are quite pleased. We have a foam luff so it maintains a pretty decent shape when reefed, and sails well reefed, if you remember to adjust the sheet leads.
We do feel that the boat has a lot more power under sail than the 25 when sailing in rough or bumpy water. The 28 seems to punch through chop under sail. It is a much heavier boat, relative to its size, than the 25. The 28 is also a lot more comfortable to stay on.
The 28 is a much beefier boat overall. Everything seems well put together and laid out nicely.
Good Luck.

We owned a CD28 for 7 years and used to "race" on Lake Ontario in the Level Regatta out of the Youngstown Yacht Club in Youngstown, NY. In the three years we raced, we came in 3rd, 1st and 2nd. This was in slow conditions except for the last race of the third year. When the wind pipes up, the CD28 is a sweet sailer. She sails on her PHRF of 219 in the white sails division. Most of the time we sailed with a 130 or 150. If the race was long enough we used a spinnaker.

If you know how to fine tune your sails, a CD28 will reward you with super results with a PHRF of 219. It is one of the most comfortable sailing 28 foot boats you can find. The club boom is a plus when you have to grunt it out while cruising. I never owned a 25 since I'm 6'3" but it would be a great choice too. There are many stories about the special racing ability of the 25. Maybe a 25 owner who races on the East Coast will respond to back me up with one of these stories.
