This bulletin board, hosted by the CDSOA, Inc., is the on-line meeting place for all Cape Dory owners and groups. We welcome everyone's questions, answers and comments about Cape Dory sailboat
Larry and I have been having discussions off board at the request of Catherine. We have decided that it is time to bury the hatchet and are requesting that everyone do likewise.
If you cannot make peace, then please take your discussions off board as requested.
Now let's get back to boating. Who would like to open the discussion on religion???
Not really much of a hatchet anyway..sorta the kind you find in your honorary Boy Scouts kit for little ones..tiny..very tiny..;^)
Now RELIGION! There is a topic I can get some teeth into..having been a candidate for the Jesuit Seminary in St. Paul after High School! heh..now I am a Coptic Wayfarer of Bakishtonni Decent, sort of a Druid mix with ovetones of The Church of the Precasiously Balanced Pretzel. >ahem..kidding of course, at least about everything after the Jesuit Seminary.
Cheers,
Larry

If you were about to repaint the inside of a brass cowl ventilator what color would you think is most traditional and complimentary to the vent sitting atop a teak dorade on a CD?
Hi John,
Well, while a bright red is the historical color, I really like a semi-gloss white epoxy coat. Something like Petits Easypoxy or is it britesides? eegads, no memory left in this old head. ANyway, that looks cool (literally), reflects a little light down the ventilator (ok, most gets gobbled up by the dorade box), and will show mildew before it blossoms into a black mucky mess.
Did you get the big flared horn type (ABI) or the squashed lower profile type?
Cheers,
Larry DeMers

Your choice please?
No pink or chartruse please !
I'll go with the semi-gloss white. I have a brass dorade vent with this color and like it a lot. FWIW

I prefer red, but Larry presents very good reasons for choosing white. If you are practical, choose white. If you're traditional, choose red. And if you are both practical AND traditional, then mix the two and paint it pink! (No straddling the fence here!)
If you are active or retired military, then paint it OD. If you're a fatalist, paint it black and if you're just plain lazy and don't care, then don't paint it at all. And if you just can't make a decision at all, then rip them out and cover the hole. You really don't need the air anyway!
......were my Dad's words of advice to me as he packed me off to Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Il. That advice served me well.....
What he didn't advise me was that it gets ccccold there in the winter!!!
Glad to see you guys back in good humor, and I sincerely hope you all thaw out soon.
It would, at this point , be insensitive of me to tease you about our wonderful NC weather, so I won't do that..... ;-]

ps- Larry, one of the local greasy spoons in Oriental closed down and the building is up for sale. It would make a wonderful Tex-Mex and YOU CAN SAIL YEAROUND.......think about it !!!
Hey Parfait!!!
I was referring to the "Village" in Oriental (the meeting place) but the Marina restaurant is on the blocks too.
Don't you think either Beaufort or Oriental need a good Tex-Mex AND another great Cape Dory sailor???
Let's convince Larry to come down to the NC coast and set up shop. Between Aimless & Parfait we can gaurantee him 72 meals a weekend. I LOVE enchiladas with salsa verde and a huevo frito on top!!!
So Larry, if you are reading this, "come on down" to the NC coast.

ps- anyone have a good enchilada recipe that an easy shipboard fix....kinda like a one-pot enchilada thing...easy to make...one pot to clean up..???
Hey Larry,
This is a standard flared cowl vent not a low profile vent. I've had it for years and it came from ABI with a flat white finish and my last boat had red (Note to N.T.O., I was minding my history then!).
That boat had stainless cowl vents and the red looked very nice. At that time I used Interthane so it wouldn't peel and the gloss would stay high. The brass ABI vent on the CD started peeling so I stripped it and was just wondering what others thought about the color with brass. I think I'll go with the white (sorry NTO) as I think the brass will look better with that then red. And yes it does pass a little light through the dorade, albeit not too much.
Sorry Clay, I said NO pink!

Do you have an oven? If so I have a recipe called Two Bean Enchiladas. I dont know if it is a "True" enchilada or not but I think it is d*#$ good. It riquires a mixing bowl and baking in a 9x12 cake pan type thing (I dont know what to call it other than a pan). No meat involved. If you're interested let me know and I type it up for you and its simple to fix!!!
Fair winds

I agree that Larry needs to become a member of the Carolinas fleet. If he brings some good Mexican food too, so much the better.
Too bad about the Marina rest., I'm not so sure about the Village. I guess M&M's will be impossible this coming season. Maybe they can take over the Marina space.
Buenos noches,
Ken
