Re: has anyone noticed
No I haven't noticed that. I find his posts interesting and informative. But I did notice that you are afraid to use your name.

I would say that he gives more to the board than he gets from the board. How many of us can say that?

Re: has anyone noticed..
I have not noticed that!!!!
What I have noticed however, is that Larry can speak to an incredible number of topics, give the most detailed summaries of problems and solutions, and throw in a sense of humor!!!!!
I know when I first bought my CD I had many questions, some simple and some more complex, I could always count on Larry to provide the answer!!!! For that I thank him.
Larry is a most valued participant on this board, AND always signs his NAME!!

Re: has anyone noticed how negative things are getting
Controversial subjects arise here sometimes but this has the flavor of a personal attack. Respectfully sir, I think that you are out of line.
Larry is a credit to this board and a heck of a nice person. I have had the pleasure of communicating with Larry on and off the Board. He is helpfull beyond the call of duty when helping his fellow sailors, and his depth of knowledge on many subjects is ,in my opinion, admirable.
I could go on but I won't. I'm not even sure responding to you at all was a good idea, as I do not want to engage in any negativity. Controversy will happen but it should not get personnal. If you have an issue with Larry address it to him. I know from experience that if he will have an open mind and give your issue serious thought. If he thinks he has offended you I assure you he would appologize. On that note you might consider an appology to him.

Re: I surely did!!!!
You Sir, are out of line! It is not only traditional but expected that anyone can voice whatever opinion he/she wants on this board. If you haven't read the Constitution of these United States Sir, this IS a country where FREE speech is a RIGHT! Captain DeMers is a very valuable asset to this site, his advice is good!
Next time you write, have the courage to sign your name...I remain Sir, your most humble servant..........

Thank you for supporting my right to free speech! When I exercised that right however, Mr. DeMet responded by calling me a "murderer".Nautical Traditions Officer wrote: You Sir, are out of line! Is that approprite, Sir?
In addition, I stated in my opinion that there were two 'men' who attempted to break into my house. Mr. DeMet changed that to "kids". It appears that this was an attempt to inflame the issue instead of simply stating a position.
Finally, Mr. DeMet chose to chastise me for not having proper religious beliefs. Apparently, this kind of conduct is allowed on this board. Otherwise, why was it allowed to go on for so long?
Mr. DeMet has stated that he gets very angry at the mention of the gun issue and I must say that he has inadvertently presented a very good argument for his position. The thought of people who are so volatile, carrying guns is a frightening prospect.

Sailing and sailing discussions are for the enjoyment of all and your personal problems and hangups should remain just that - your personal problems.

Please listen to our Webmasters
Our hard working Webmasters have done a fine job trying to set the tone of this board. Most recently, Catherine wrote:
"Please try to keep the topics on this board limited to Cape Dory related items. This includes questions, problems, resolutions, projects and improvements specifically related to the boats themselves as well as questions/comments/stories regarding how/when/where the boats are used. Posts should be informative and/or fun but never offensive, intimidating or threatening. Opinions, both pro and con, should be expressed openly with civility never attacking another's character, motives or values."
On this basis. I think this thread should be deleted. This is not a free speech issue. Free speech applies on the streetcorner, in the press and most pubic places. In my living room I have every right to ask an offensive person to leave. I think this Board should be treated with the courtesy you might exhibit if visiting Walt or Cathy's home. So, please be courteous and abide by their requests. There are plenty of other places to air off-topic issues.
This board has exponentially increased both the level of my knowledge and the speed of acquiring that knowledge about problems, resolutions, projects and improvements specifically related to Cape Dories (and by extension, boats in general) as well as sailing and navigation in general. Others will concur. Let's shed the "off season stress" by helping each other, not attacking each other.
Thank you,

Re: has anyone noticed
I AM A LOSER. I SHOULD CLIMB TO THE TOO OF MY MAST AND JUMP OFF. I SHOULD POLISH MY BOAT WITH AN ORBITAL WHEN THE BOAT IS IN THE WATER> I SHOULD DRIVE A BIG STINK POT!!! I HAVE WAY TO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS ! I SHOULD CUT MY HEAD OFF AND OFFER I TO LARRY AS AN APOLOGY.
Please don't delete this thread
I read, and sometimes participate in, several other sailing message boards. Only this board and Trailer Sailor have a positive helpful group of people who exhibit a sense of community. I find comming here not only helps my sailing, but it also gives me a refresher on the better aspects of humanity.
The nameless posters on other boards have, at least for me, ruined any sense that the advice I was getting was in any way designed to help me. Based on other feedback at these boards, the nameless seem to spoil it for everyone.
I'm inspired by the people on this board who say what they mean and sign their names. I think the response we have seen is one of those things that shows we can rise above that type of behavior.

PLEASE DON'T LET THIS BOARD UNRAVEL!!
Bill is right in his advice! Cape Dory captains! We a have a GOLD MINE of information here that may be unique among a myriad of sailing related pages. Where else can you ask a specific question about your boat and get 10 authoritative answers within 24 hours? Where else will someone you've never met sit down and write a half hour detailed treatise on how to rewire a difficult portion of your boat and then go to the trouble of scanning in a picture and post it for you to see? Where else will a "stranger" spend 20 minutes rummaging through and old catalog to get a part number not for a part he needs, but for one you need? Here and consistently here! And only because you happen to have a common interest...the love of Cape Dory boats. Where else can you find people with 40 years of sailing experience giving advice, without looking down their noses, to someone sailing for the first time? Right here. Nowhere else. I'll tell you right now I NEED this board! I'm an expert fixing things built from DNA, but when it comes to things made out of tinned wire, fiberglass, stainless steel, dacron material or bronze, and runs on diesel fuel rather than blood, I need all the help I can get! Some bad vibes have surfaced on this board as of late and I am SURE NOBODY intended it to happen. Nevertheless, we are quickly heading to the edge of a slippery slope that could irrepairably harm the character of this board. I think the board has lost its focus. Let's all remember what "brung us" here in the first place. Anyone has the right to post whatever he or she wants on this board but I strongly suggest that we get back to discussing paint, autopilots, batteries and stuffing boxes. If this board loses its unity and unravels, we ALL lose!

Re: I surely did!!!!

In your post (which has since been deleted) you expressed regret for not shooting someone who you think was breaking into your house.
You described the situation and how they did not get in but you wished you had shot them anyway. Larry said that in THOSE circumstances he would consider you a murderer and frankly so would the law in any state without the "Make My Day" laws.
Another fact is this. Accidental shootings happen all too frequently under circumstances exactly as you described. Every time the shooter was convinced that the person they shot (usually a friend or family member)was a bad guy, or they did not realize until too late that they were not a bad guy. It is also entirely possible that whoever it was was just messing around but young and otherwise innocent. Would you have felt good about ending their life over some stuff? I think Larry gave you sound advise to reconsider your zeal to shoot someone, good or bad. Will W.
P.S. I would not be sorry to see this thread deleted and our free speech continue in a more friendly tone.

I am saddened to open this board this morning and see this direction of discussion. It would be truly helpful if all participants adhered to the guidelines put forth by Walter and Catherine....they are for the good of the board and all participants. I do not always agree with Larry or some others, for that matter, but respect their right to their opinions, and frankly, I find Larry both unique and quite generous in his participation...would hate to see that change. Please try to keep personal attacks and sarcastics responses off of this board!!A LURKER wrote: that larry is generally involved in "upsets" on the board?
