I recently bought a CD-28 and would like to find a copy of the owners manual. If anyone has a source, or would be willing to make me a copy, I'd really appreciate it. I would, of course be happy to cover any expenses.
In addition, if you have any suggestions on modifications/additions, etc., I'd like to hear them. This is a 1976 model and judging by the sales photos I've seen of that particular year, no mods of any significance have been made. Besides adding some instruments, I'm planning to reface some of the cabinets, add a holding tank, and try and add a wood sole of some type. Any suggestions on materials and where to get them would really help.
The previous owner removed the self-tending jib hardware but I have it. Any thoughts on whether to reinstall would be very helpful. I think I'd at least like to try it.
Thanks for any suggestions. I'll post results of my changes (they'll probably be done slowly) if there is any interest.
Jim.

Re: CD-28 Sloop information
Hi Jim,
I have the Cape Dory Manual which covers the Typhoon Daysailer/Weekender, CD22, CD22D, CD25D, CD27, CD28
and CD30C/CD30K. The manual is the fifth edition, 1983. It includes information about the base boat..standing rigging,
engine shaft details, sail plans, rudder details, etc. Nothing on engines since they varied. If you can not find a copy
closer or faster to you ( I am in Virginia) I would be happy to provide a photocopy. It will take a few days, however, to
run the copy. Just drop me an E-Mail at 'arenius@jlab.org' with your mailing address.

Jim:
Club Jib:
If you're planning on doing a lot of singlehanded sailing, the club jib is ideal, as you can tack without handling any sheets. You just put the tiller over. That's neat. The boat also sails very high when using the club jib as you can sheet it in really tight. On the downside, the small working jib you won't give you the power a big genoa can provide in lighter air. Since Cape Dory's are already slow in light air, this can be a real problem. Also, the jibboom rises on a reach, and you get poor sail shape, with consequent speed loss. The jibboom should have a vang added to correct this.
Regarding upgrades, how far from Lake Michigan are you? If you close enough to visit, come to the Lake Michigan Cape Dory Owners Association Rendezvous in August, and see the changes and upgrades made to the boats. We usually have about 14 boats at the Rendezvous.
Other wise, send me an email message, and I'll send you some upgrade information

Re: CD-28 Sloop information
Jim I have a copy of the owners manual for 1977 or it maybe 76 I'm not really sure and I'd be glad to make a copy of it for you. You can e-mail me at camroll@together.net. As for the jib boom I took mine off and threw it away. As far as I could tell it was just a jibe waiting to sweep me or my kids over the side. I just use the working jib without the boom. I put a block at the clew of the sail and rig it just like you would if the boom was on it. It essentially makes it a self tending jib so you get all the benefits of the boom without the boom. It works pretty good. The sail shape isn't the greatest but the only time I use this rig is if its really honking and then I'm not that worried about sail shape anyway. nPlus its really great on those honking days not to have to haul the jib around.Jim Giles wrote: I recently bought a CD-28 and would like to find a copy of the owners manual.
