I plan on dropping the rudder with rudder stock while my 1974 CD 25 is still in the water. The bottom of the rudder is already out of its base as a result of a grounding on a particularly lovely, white sand beach. Will it float to the surface?

i don't know but i had the rudder out of my CD31 last year and it was so heavy i couldn't lift it by myself - i've read rudders are supposed to have nearly neutral buoyancy in water but it's hard to believe - i would certainly secure it before letting it go into the water! - on your boat, with the rudder out, will water come in through the shaft housing? - please post a follow-up

Re: floating rudder
My CD25 is on it's trailer, and this rudder feels too heavy to float (I can lift it up and down a little).
