Re:Lake Superior Weather today.>!
Just took a peek at the weather for my Lake Superior..and wow! She's a kickin' up a fuss it seems. That's 50 kt Storm Warnings and 16 fters!
Believe it or not, I wish we could try to sail this wind with the new sail setup. Would love to know how well it handles 50+kts. which is what we designed the system for.

Its those snow showers!
Larry,
A weather report like that just makes me snuggle deeper into my bed and pull the blankets up a little further over my head, all on dry land! Its not those roaring 50 knot winds or even those monsterous 16 ft waves that drive me to take such refuge. Nosiree! Its the "possibility" of snow showers. HA!

Re: Storm Trysail weather/bare poles
Len,
I was semi-serious about wanting to test out the sails capability in those winds. I have experienced 50+ kts twice before, and it truly is a different boat that you have to contend with. The tacks were horrible 160 deg. tacks, with no forward progress..making the trip home a very long one, sneaking up along the shoreline, and running the 30 ft. curve while motoring. What would normally take 3 hours to do took almost 8. There were 30 of us that went to an anchorage for the evening, and woke up to a storm warning in the islands and heavy snow.
Now realize that our sailing is inside the archipelago of the Apostle Islands for the most part..especially in these conditions, so there is a lee that we can gain behind any of the 22 islands in the 800 sq. mile area we sail in. These less are at most 5-6 miles apart.
So like the guy that lost his mast in front of us, he simply let his boat get blown into the nearest islands lee, and waited for the CG whom we called to help them out (charterers).
I will try to get some pictures of this event if it continues thru Friday pm, as we will be up there then, for the weekend.
The waves at 16 ft. have got to be incredible. We had maybe 12 fters at the most, since the winds were SW and so had only a few miles of fetch. In this storm the fetch is more like 80 miles (from Duluth basicly). We are lucky it wasn't a NE'er with it's 330 miiles of fetch! Would be seeing 20 fters then.
Brrr.

Larry,
After work today I’ll put on my shorts & T, grab a cold brew and go down to put another coat of varnish on the hatch cover rails. How could you possibly want to go out in that weather? You want 50+ knots and 16'+ seas....try the gulf stream in storm season....at least it won't be snowing on ya! LOL. With your passion to sail you should consider moving south my friend, as MADNESS III only goes on the hard for a week or two for bottom paint and maintenance…..once a year. If you do go out... don’t freeze anything (LOL) and good luck!

The weather isn't the same everywhere. I had a friend who lived on the UP for a while, and then he moved south (Lansing).

Re: Storm Trysail weather/bare poles
Sort of..it's a loose footed main with 3 reef points, and the upper portion is 1 weight heavier sailcloth. The main difference between this and the storm trisail is that I still use the boom for the clew attachment, while the trisail is rigged to the stern quarters of the vessel...and it is also probably a stiffer sail. We also have a deeply reefed staysail and heavy duty reefing reinforcements, which in theory will balance out on the helm.
But I need to use these winds to test it out..unfortunately, it is too cold and the boat is tucked safely away for the winter now. Otherwise We would be up there trying out the gear. What led to us installing this capability is that we have been caught twice in over 50 kts of wind, and had some trouble making any progress beating into the waves and winds due to the sails being too large and full for the winds.
These winds do come up in the summer also, although quite rarely. Three years ago now, we were at anchor when the only acknowledged and named Inland Hurricane (according to the NWS) hit us. Winds hit 150 kts and took down 2 million trees in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northern Minn., trapped 3000 people up there for up to a week etc. We were at the anchorage and saw the anvil top of the first thunderhead get blown from about 50,000 ft. right down to the water by a microburst (seen from the side, it looked like a white tongue). It exploded on contact with the water, sending spume and spray all over the place..could not see through the water it kicked up. I got that on video too..all night long the T.S's. kept coming through..one an hour, causing the winds to box the compass..starting out at 50 kts and 5ft seas in the achorage, and 30 minutes later, as the T.S passed by, it was down to 20 kts. from the SE and then it would drop to zero for 15 minutes, then restart at 50 kts again. We pulled anchor twice and repositioned the boat to accomodate the drift from resetting the anchor on the winds direction changes. This happened 9 times over 10 hours or so, and I was in contact with the CG and other boats that were bailing out of the other anchorages in the islands, trying to head for safety of their docks (?). (would have been safer to sit tight I think).
Anyway, that's my war story,
Larry

Re:Lake Superior Weather today.>!Ouch!!!
We are on the hard now, and winterized, so our visit this weekend is to install a hinged access hatch over the Golf Cart battery box in the vberth, put on the boat cover and depressurize from the week..no sailing! But we would like to get a chance to try that kind of condition again, with the escape path of ducking out of the winds behind one of our islands..should something untoward happen.
Otherwise, we wait now for March to come before returning to the boat. Chris..you lucky pup! Shorts and T shirt while I am throwing another handful of wood on the fire and getting bummed over the long wait til spring.
Have a great winter sailing, and have a cup for us sailors in the frozen tundra of the north (heh, sounds like I'm in Yukon territory or something!)
Cheers,
Larry

Re:Lake Superior Weather today.>!
I envy your spirit if not your judgement, Larry. However, I enjoyed spending the morning putting some finishing touches on new varnish (85 degrees; wind 10K) before a cold front comes through tonight. It's going down to the forties or something. Highs around 70 for the weekend. Tough duty, but I think I have to go sailing!
