Holding tank replacement?

Post by Dave »

Well, first I would like to say this is not a job that i am looking forward to. I have a 1978 CD 25' and over the last couple of weeks that she was in the water I noticed a very distinct odor. I fear that my stainless holding tank has a small leak in it. I never put anything in the tank, but I'm sure there is some slight stuff in there.
My question is; I don't want to replace it with another stainless tank, so what should I replace it with? Through reading I found welded seams are the first to go and i want this to be a one time repair.
Any sugestions to help make this messy project easier would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

Kracor makes tanks in all sizes and shapes. Check out their web site at the link below (you will need Acrobat).

Dave,

The latest Sail or Cruising World has a short article on this. Stainless is the last thing to use; it has a life of about 3 years as a holding tank.

BTW, we checked our vent the other day and discovered:

a) stock vent head is the usual W/C fuel vent and totally inadequate

b) it was nearly totally blocked with insect leavings and salt.

We replaced the through hull with about $10 of bronze and feel much better already. Our quest for the optimum plumbing arrangement for Parfait continues, but we are making progress having found a path from the head behind the port water tank to the bilge.

The tank needs oxygen to work, so you may have a simple problem of no venting that is causing trouble.

Good luck,

Dave,

I am in the process of replacing mine on our Pearson 365. Like you, it was not something I looked forward to. I read a good article on marine sanitation at

http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/phall.htm

I then ordered the tank and fittings from a company called ocean link.

http://www.oceanlinkinc.com/

I haven't received it yet but their customer service has been very good thus far. I have actually received two calls from them asking me questions about my tank and informing me of the ship date.

Best of Luck,

woody

Stock vent head??

Post by Chris Scheck »

Ken -

could you elaborate?

"Stock vent head is the standard W/C fuel vent and totally inadequate."

I am so confused. All I know is that ocasionally I'm leaning over the transom to pull up the ladder on our CD33 and whew! ... it's enough to knock a buzzard off the proverbial wagon!

Do I have a plugged pipe somewhere?

Chris,

Well, if you can smell your tank, I am told you have an anerobic bacteria in there when you wish you had an aerobic bacteria. If the contents are not exposed to air, the wrong bacteria take over and it will smell. However, if you can smell it off the transom, then I would suppose that your vent is not blocked, so you might just have a case of too little venting as opposed to none.

Peggy Peal is the expert on all this and she takes email. Her treatise on the subject on the web so you might try searching for it under her name.

As for the vent, I removed the fuel tank vent fitting on the transom and replaced it with a simple bronze mushroom through hull with a hose adapter. I hope to add another vent line, but it is much lower on my list.
