Prospective ty buyer with ?'s

Post by Josh »

I am thinking of buying a typhoon to sail in the Salem Ma area and have a few questions.
1. Does the ty have a spinaker, or can it be outfitted with one?

2. What is the cruising speed of the ty ?

3. Trouble spots to look for? Where there any bad years?

4. Engine size?

5. Does anyone know of any fixer uppers for sale in NE?

Thanks for any help you may offer.
Josh

you may be able to find a typhoon with a spinaker I am about to add one to mine for next season.

In buzzards bay I routinely get 5 + knot from my Typhoon.

The typhoon is sensative to how much weight you hang on the transom I use a 3.0 hp and it does ok unless the seas get real rough. Two things to keep in mind a long shaft is essential and anything under 35 Lbs. will not upset the balance of a typhoon.

Josh, here's some of what I've heard mixed with some opinion:

1.) I believe my boat is pretty much stock & it's not setup for a spinnaker so I can't comment on the performace of one.

2.) We've gotten our Ty up to 5 knots, not much quicker than that unless you're riding a wave.

3.) As with any deck stepped sailboat, I would check around the cabintop looking for a deformed deck, etc. I've seen the deck area around some Tys raised up near the chainplates....not good! I think from like 1980 onwards, CD reinforced this area a bit better.

4.)I run a 4HP, 2-stroke SS Mercury. I like the F-N-R + swivel option. I think for higher wind/swell conditions, a long shaft is the way to go (store the motor below).

I have an old 1970 Ty. Mine came with the original kite that seems like its was very seldom used, thus in excellent shape. As with any sloop, the boat really goes a lot faster and with less yaw downwind with a kite versus a genoa. It will be most evident when sailing broad in three foot or greater waves. I have sailed a lot both ways as I can't use it when single handing.

I have a 4hp Johnson. If I were to replace it I'd go down to 3hp.

Josh,
I hope you grow to love the typhoon as so many others of us have. I have Typhoon #73 and have owned it and a CD 27.

Mine is a 1970 model and has not had any significant repair work done to it. Soon after buying it, I did pop a turnbuckle so replaced them. Then, I poped a stay so replaced the standing rigging. This took place over five years of time so it wasn't like it came apart on me at once. All along, there have been maintenance jobs that keep the boat ship shape. I have added reef points to the main which serve us well in a little more breeze.

I don't have a spinnaker but one was with the boat when I bought it. The lady just couldn't part with it. Since I solo so much, I don't know how much I would use it anyway.

I use a 3hp outboard and stow it below. It pushes the boat as fast as the keel will allow.

Hull speed is about five to five and one half knots. Regular cruising speed for us ends up being around four to five knots.

Hope you enjoy your boat like the others of us have. Sorry, I don't know of any available up there.

No one seems to have addressed item 5 so here goes. There is one at 77 Leach St in Salem. Ring the doorbell, or call 978-745-8013, or e-mail.

I would be willing to part with mine (we're looking to go bigger)- email me if interested at chill334@home.com.

Boat is located in Mantoloking, NJ - has 150% roller furling, 1996 4HP Mercury and is a 1980. I wouldn't really consider it a fixer-upper but I suppose it could use some detailing. $3600. for it.
