dead starter, cheaper solution?

Post by Steve Alarcon »

Last Sept. I removed my starter and had it rebuilt because the solenoid went out. I had considered replacing with new 'cause its tough to get to the starter for a guy my size, but the local Volvo dealer wanted $650 for a new one!

Well, this evening the "rebuilt" starter with replaced solenoid once again refused to function, this time only clicking when the key was turned. Both batterys are fully charged. So, it seems that a new starter may be in my future. BUT, I hate to drop so much dough (it interrupts my other pet projects on the 2nd love of my life)!

Does anyone out there have a cheaper source for starters? Or a better idea at all (my ego is under control)?

Thanks for any tips!

Steve;

I am new to deisel (and marine) engines. But I have replaced several auto starters, and have found that sometimes it was the voltage regulator. Do deisels have voltage regulators? Just a thought!

Sounds similar to intermittant problem I had with Volvo MD-7 in my previous boat. Never found the cause, but tapping on the starter with a soft-face hammer did the trick several times. I think you need to do some trouble-shooting before you go to the dealer.

i had had many a hour trying to figure out what is going on with my starter. at first i thought start switch. replaIed it engine worked but then clicked again. i have replaced the ignition wire (gray) bought
new batt cables batt switch and really believe problem is in dirty grounding. I did buy a replacement starter (they ARE NOT marinized) meaning they can exist on other nonmarine engines. I took my starter to a place that rebuilds and they ordered me a new starter for about 100$ .... 490$ cheaper than the marine starter which is exactly the` same as
so if your starter really is bad- put power to it to test buy a starter through a non marine source i keep my boat on ocean so i always am concerned with electrical connections corrosion

best of luck but clicking doesnt nec mean starter is bad

Steve, before investing any more money, I suggest pulling the engine control panel in the cockpit and checking for any loose connections. That was the problem on my CD30. The wire was just loose enough to allow clicking but not tight enough to start the engine. Good luck.

Low voltage can be an insidious culprit - The fact that your rebuilt quit on you so soon suggests the possibility of a low voltage problem. The batteries may be fully charged but the connections aren't good somewhere along the way.

Steve, you didn't metion which engine you have, but I've got the Universal 21 hp diesel. Check the switches on the control panel. On mine if she sits for awhile the contacts in the switches seem to corrode or something. Press in and then work the button back and forth clockwise and counterclockwise. This seems to clean the contacts. Get the glow plug hot and then let up for a second and press the plug switch and the start switch in at the same time or work them back and forth one and then the other. It's never failed to start, but sometimes you have to fuss with it a little. Also happens when the engine is hot such as at a fuel dock where you just stop for a minute.

I am not familiar with the exact model you have or its accessability, but it can be tested without being removed by jumping across the two big terminals on the solenoid. if the starter, battery and battery cables are ok, it should turn over merrily. Use a big wire to jump, as it gets hot.

I found the problem!!!

Thanks to all who responded to my plea for help. I followed the consensus and spent a few hours trouble shooting yesterday. I found that the ground wire from the battery to engine was loose and corroded at the engine. Once clean and tight everything was fine.

Glad to hear you solved your problem! If you should find yourself in the market for a new starter, we have one that's almost-new. We had to replace ours awhile back, then ended up replacing the entire engine. We'll make you a good deal!
