I am looking for information and recomendations on the Cape Dory 9m.
I am looking at one with purchase in mind. She is fin keel with skeg hung rudder. Wheel steering. The boat is in fair shape but is lacking in any upgrades or electronics. Regular ice box and origo stove. I have no idea what the market value of the boat is so any help would be appreciated. The engine is a Volvo MD7a with a rebuilt trans. She also has a new main. Pleas contact me at my E mail addy if you can give advice idea of value.

Re: Cape Dory Intrepid price
Most of the Intrepids I have seen on the east coast end up going for 18 to 20K depending on equipment and condition. If its a bare minimum boat I.E. lines not led aft no lazy jacks no electronic gear and just an ice box I would be hard pressed to offer alot. Your going to have to do and spend a lot to bring it up to cruising snuff.Douglas G Young wrote: I am looking for information and recomendations on the Cape Dory 9m.

Agree with the general pricing comments. I bought a 1979 9m in June 2000 for mid-teens and found prices ranging up to $30K on the web then. Also, see the "blue book" value at www.bucnet.com.
My Intrepid 9m was in similar condition - tiller vs. wheel. Depending on your sailing expectations/needs, the spartan upgrades can be positive. For example, you can make the improvements you want or need without paying for stuff you don't, the time spent on maintenance vs. sailing... I've added a roller fuller (highly recommended) and new sails (135, main) this year for less than $5K. My two speed lewmar winches work fine - self tailing for me is low priority for the moderate sail plan.
My halyards are still at the mast. While not a problem for "single" handing it so far, leading the lines aft would be nicer. However, the fuller minimizes the need to go forward and my cockpit stays clear of most lines (I not playing with outhaul or cunningham regularly). My real issue is only having one jib halyard. This too can be easily added, but is low on my priority list. Fearful of scenario's needing me to go up the mast...
Overall, I find this boat is a sleeper and can be a good value. In my area, this $ buys you similarly dated Pearsons, ODays, etc. -- the construction quality of CD and the layout/finish of the 9m below is superior.

I have found it to be a great boat overnight and handles well in
rough weather .No problems when I redid the bottom no blisters ,gelcoat problems on the main deck mostly caused to thick a gel coat ,sand fill and repaint .Rigging fine edson wheel no problems
You will have to take the time to rebed all your deck fittings .
