CD36 Refrigeration

Post by Charlie Mauk »

We are installing an Adler-Barber super cold refrigeration on CD36 and struggling with the location of the compressor. Would like to know your experiences: does anyone have one, where did you locate the compressor, with the heat exchange air flow around the unit is critical. Would like feed back on your experiences.

I have a CD28 and the unit was installed on a platform fabricated in the starboard lazerette. I have had no problems with the unit.

Charlie,

This probably won't help because of the distance involved, but our A/C / heat pump unit is mounted in the upper half of the starboard hanging locker opposite the head.

On Parfait there is vented space aft of the batteries in the port cockpit locker, but it might not be large enough.

In any case, I'll be interested in what you do and how it works as refigeration is a significant weak point in the stock ice box installation. Larry Demers has recent experience with all this, so I will be re-reading all his posts when the time comes.

Charlie Mauk wrote: We installed athe same unit on our CD 30MKII (Finally) two years ago. The galley layouts are very similar. We installed the compressor unit under the galley sink and vented the cabinet base on the inboard side. The cabinet door should also be vented if is not. Ours has performed
perfectly with no problems. E-mail me diredt if you have any questions.

Charlie:
My shore assist compressor is mounted in the lazarette behind the galley. It draws cooling air from the galley through a vented cabinet door. It was installed when I bought the boat and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it actually worked. I believe the galley and lazarette layouts on our boats is the same. Good Luck.

Charlie,
I have exactly that unit, just replaced the previous Super Cold Machine that went "toes up" after about ten years (according to the records). It is installed (prior to me buying the boat) in the port lazarette, suspended above the water heater from aluminum hangers at the aft end and secured to a 1.5" aluminum shelf (actually a piece of aluminum "L") at the forward end. There is a 3.5 inch hole through the bulkhead which draws cooling air from the cabin through the cabinetry. The fan unit is butted up against a piece of foam (with a 4" hole in the middle) to insure that only air from the cabin is pulled throught the radiator. The through-hull for water cooling is directly below. It is absolutely the slickest installation I have ever seen, as it puts the compressor closest to the evaporator, uses space that was otherwise tough to put to use, and is incredibly easy to get to. The Super Cold Machine works great, and even froze some water that was collected in the bottom of the ice box. Makes ice cubes like a champ, and the evaporator can hold quite a bit of stuff!

I also have a CD 28 with the frig unit for my Adler Barbour mounted on top of the diesel tank under the stove area on the other side of the companion way opposite the frig box! I did add extra insulation to the icebox as well as insulate the lines leading to the icebox as they went through the engine area with Refletex, and, also added a vent in the stove area.

Was out and about for a month up in Princess Louisa and Desolation Sound without a problem!! Sure nice not to have to mess with ice-and actually make ice!!
