I am interested in sculling my TY and wondered what the preferred mounting for the oarlock would be. I am always reluctant to drill holes in boats. Thanks in advance.

Re: sculling a TY
I have been sculling my TY Weekender for over 8 years now. I use a butterfly oarlock mounted on the stern of the boat and, as of yet, have experienced no problems.

Re: sculling a TY
I had a weekender for several years and sculled it from a large drop-down type oarlock mounted on the transom and a 10' sweep. As per Pete Culler; the blade of the oar was flat on one side (this was the "aft" side when sculling), and convex (sort of a peaked ridge for strength) on the other. The oarlock was mounted off-center to starboard so that the boat could be steered with one's knees. I experimented with several variations, such as a short 90º handle, and a lanyard to the oarlock. All in all it was fun, cheap, and never failed to start a conversation.
good luck,

Woody,
In Lin & Larry Pardee's book "The Cost Conscious Cruiser" they have a chapter on sculling sailing craft. I believe they recommended mounting the oarlock on a board. Then clamping the board in various position and trying it out to determine the best permanent location.
