A while back a dicussion was had on this page about flying a jib only on what I believe was any boat that had a deck-stepped mast. Someone had mentioned that they had read that flying the jib only could be a dangerous endeavour. Why? I would like to know how others feel about this. Flying the jib only while going downwind in a strong wind seems to work well.

Re: Jib only on Typhoon
On my Typhoon, CD22 and my current CD30 the jib is my last sail of use when things get really blowy. We were off Long Island one day when the wind (measured) was gusting over 50 MPH and with the full yankee PERI was scooting along with her rail down at more than hull speed, and no failures that I've ever been able to detect. It sure made the yankee sheet shrink down is size where it was tied to the yankee clew!
I think in a well built boat like a CD, using the jib alone is no problem.
