tiller to wheel conversion

Post by Paul Grecay »

Greetings....I am hoping someone may have experience in converting tiller steering to wheel steering. I have a 1976 CD 28...I have always wanted wheel steering and I have just been given the opportunity to get the Edson steering gear from a 35' Island Packet ('89). Does anyone know what is involved in making this type of conversion. Is it practical to retrofit tiller steering with worm gear/quadrant type wheel steering? I am a little nervous about making the change so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks all.

Paul,

I'm sure you'll get some good answers on here, but I'd also contact Edson for their advice. I have little doubt that they've got records on both the Cape Dory 28 and the Island Packet and can give you some good advice on how to do things right or if you even may be getting appropriate equipment for your CD28.

My CD30 actually has a steel beam frame under the cockpit that makes the wheel steering and cable pulleys one solid assembly. I was impressed the first time I went under there to lubricate the steering system.

Edson is the kind of firm that when you write and ask to purchase the right lubricating grease, they send it to you for free. I suspect they'll work with you if you wish to proceed.

Steering the boat seem pretty important to me, you sure want to make sure you're doing it right!
