Night Vision scopes

Does anyone have any experience with night vision scopes?

Boat US has a sale on a Gen 1 monocular for $299. According to the West Catalog, Gen 1's are nowhere near as good as Gen 2 and 3, but those things are $$$$.

It would seem like a good piece of safety equipment for cruising if in fact they worked. Curious to know if the inexpensive models work or are just a waste of money.
