Cockpit drains for CD typhoon

Post by C.C. »

The seacocks on my C.D. typhoon have frozen up - I don't think they've been touched since the boat left the factory. The seacocks are installed with a bedding compound which is holding the seacock to the teakplate like cement. Any suggestions on how to remove? Also, any suggestions on servicing the outside drain plugs would be helpful as I've noticed that the bedding compound on the outside hull surface is starting to fail.

Thanks in advance!!

Are they seacocks or gate valves? If they are true seacocks you should be able to disassemble them for cleaning and lubrication. The nut on the side of the seacock opposite the valve handle is removed and the barrel of the seacock is tapped gently toward the handle end. Because the barrel of the seacock is tapered, only a small amount of movement of the barrel is necessary for the removal cleaning, lubrication and reinstallation. When reinstalling the barrel, do not overtighten the nut.

And I guess I should have started this with "Do not attempt this repair in the water!"

Sincerely,

Lee
