Interesting. I just bought a 27' Cape Dory, 1978. Needed work in many ways but generally in good shape. Looking forward to retiring in just over a year and a half. Have a cocker spaniel and a wife, so two attractive females on board, as well. Haven't had the boat out yet as it is still having electrical, electronics and head plumbing improved. Annapolis area. Good hunting for your Cape Dory, and fair winds.

I have owned a Cape Dory 27 for 6 years; I looked at a lot of boats before I chose this one. You will like the CD27- it is agile and quick with the right sails (and wind!), yet is very stable and seakindly. As far as I know, there were no "bad" years for these boats. They began building them in 1977, and ended in the mid 1980s. I own hull #47, which was built in 1977.

They are pretty much bulletproof boats. One thing you should look for is moisture trapped in the decks. The decks on Cape Dories are generally cored with balsa, which is a good thing UNLESS water gets in somehow. My boat had a small area of soggy deck core around the fuel fill; the gelcoat around it was cracked from the trapped water which expanding during the winter when frozen. My surveyor found that spot, but it was obvious even to my untrained eye that all was not right. That should be taken care of, as moisture wicks through the core; then more of your deck is soggy. Small areas of soggy core are not hard to fix; but if much of your deck is soggy, you're in for a big yard bill, or a lot of work. You can find these areas yourself usually by tapping with the handle of a screwdriver or a small plastic hammer. If you get a nice solid "ring", it's fine. If you hear a mushy "thunk", like hitting a salami, the core is likely to be wet. You will probably see cracks there, too. Just because you see cracks here & there in the gelcoat does NOT mean the core is wet- it's not uncommon for these boats to have gelcoat cracking around the corners of the cabin (where it meets the deck), because that area is under a lot of stress. My boat has some gelcoat cracks there, but the core is dry as a bone.

Look for cracks under the bronze tiller-head. Easy and cheap to fix, though. The Yanmar YSB and YSM8 engines in the earlier boats are not too powerful, but adequate and strong as an ox. Mine runs like a champ. I believe the later boats had a 13 hp engine, which is nice to have.

Good luck! Get a survey is the boat looks good to you- it will be worth every penny!
